Autoretrato y Cuerpo Colectivo

What is this space called "body"? What are its limits? To what extent is this inner chamber of the being expansive, deep, mutable, dark, and illuminated? How is the body constructed in the experience of migration?

In this workshop, we use self-portraiture as a means to journey toward the inner cosmos of the human being. It is a sensitive possibility of self-knowledge through the exploration of creativity as an emancipatory door, the exploration of the "I," a mutable "identity" that continually transforms.

This series of workshops is a collaboration with Venezuelan artist Sofia Saavedra, whose career has explored the body as fluid, changing, and in constant motion. Through an overview of some of the most important references in self-referential art, we share with participants a series of creative methods and tools for them to open a channel to connect with their inner space, and generate aesthetic proposals that reflect their discoveries about themselves.

The workshops are designed for Latinx people who live in the United States. We will experiment with art-based methods to arrive at body maps that tell stories of migration and cultural struggle using various visual, sound and textile media. As a group, we will create a collective body map that weaves together individual struggles and collective narratives of bodily resistance.
